Visiting Our State Fair – Wisconsin Garden Video Blog 789

See More Garden Goodies: http://www.WisconsinGarden.com – – – One of several summer events we enjoy supporting is visiting our state fair. The Wisconsin State fair has been operating since 1851 in Janesville, Wisconsin and moved to its current home in West Allis in 1892. President Abraham Lincoln spoke to farmers at the 1859 fair about embracing new agricultural methods that would help raise their standard of living. We like to attend as our way of showing support for the farmers, ranchers, 4-H Club, DNR, master gardeners, and local business entities, entrepreneurs and vendors. With low milk and beef prices it was interesting talking with exhibitors about the state of the farming community and some of the challenges they are facing, including finding reliable workers who will actually show up for work. So we’re off to see the cattle, horses, wagons, and of course Richard’s favorite stops, the goats. We will naturally have to stop and enjoy some very tasty treats as we walk through a colorful playground of rides, food, drinks, special events and presentations, and our famous Cream Puffs. If you haven’t been to your state fair, join us to see what you’re missing.

Making Peach Crisp – Wisconsin Garden Video Blog 790

See More Garden Goodies: http://www.WisconsinGarden.com – – – This afternoon we’re making peach crisp from our peach trees. So far we’ve made over 18 pints of peach jam and 4 pints of peach sauce. While we’ve picked hundreds from our O’Henry and Red Haven peach trees, our two Elberta peaches have yet to ripen. Perhaps some will be ready sometime next week and those we will be freezing and canning. We both enjoy America’s Test Kitchen because they explain the science behind what they do and why they cook things a specific way. So I’m going to be using one of their recipes. Now that Richard and I have some delicious peach jam and sauce for our occasional ice cream sundaes, we thought we’d top off tonight’s supper with some warm peach crisp. Wish smell-o-vision was here so you could join us in activating your taste buds once again.

Amazing Mallow Family – Wisconsin Garden Video Blog 788

See More Garden Goodies: http://www.WisconsinGarden.com – – – Today we simply wanted to discuss and show some of our amazing mallow family of plants where some hardy species can tolerate zone 4 or minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit. With over 4,200 known species, we wanted to make sure you were aware of this incredible family of plants. It’s part of the Malvaceae (Malvales) family which got its name from the root of the plant which used to be processed to make marshmallow treats. Today we’ll take a closer look at some of our annual and perennial species. The smaller annual blossoming Zebra Mallow seed themselves and is currently growing alongside our yearly Zinnia garden. We haven’t trimmed or cut back Our Rose of Sharon bush so this year with all the rain it’s filled with hundreds and perhaps thousands of blossoms. We also have 4 different varieties of Giant Hardy Hibiscus including: Pink – Cranberry Crush, Pinkish Red – Jazzberry Jam, White – Blue River and the Deep Red – Midnight Marvel. While each blossom may only last one or possibly two days depending upon the weather, these huge platter sized blossoms will take your breath away beginning in mid summer all the way through fall. So if you’re looking for a specimen plant to add an impressive splash of color to your garden, start looking for some hardy hibiscus varieties to add this fall. You won’t be disappointed.

Touring A Clean Water Treatment Plant – Wisconsin Garden Video Blog 787

See More Garden Goodies: http://www.WisconsinGarden.com – – – Today we’ll be touring a clean water treatment plant in Waukesha Wisconsin. We’ve been invited to join this tour by Joanna Salinas from the Waukesha County Green Team as part of their Green Drinks tours. Our guide for today will be Nate Tillis, plant maintenance supervisor, who will be explaining how the multiple stages of wastewater sludge is skimmed, condensed and processed for removal while the majority of water is filtered and cleansed through multiple stages before it can be released to the river and ultimately nature’s filtering aquifer. As Waukesha County expands so is the demand for water. In the near future Waukesha will be receiving its water supply from Lake Michigan after years of negotiations with the Great Lakes Compact Council approving miles of pipeline that will soon have to be built from Oak Creek to Waukesha. Waukesha will then return treated wastewater via the Root River. So the next time you flush your toilet you now have a cleaner idea of where all the waste goes and how it’s refined, processed and removed before being sent back to nature’s waterways, and ultimately the drinking water resource of the future. As past of a worldwide gardening community, we too are stewards of the land and need to know how we can help protect our most valuable resource – water.

Landscape Fabric | Mulch | Penstemon // Garden Answer

Good morning! I got a few projects done outside yesterday- some of them were the type of things that you keep ‘meaning to do’, but keep putting off for some reason. It felt so good! I’m loving the new look my front urns now have, and the new mulch in the Versailles garden makes everything look so complete. It’s been a touch cooler the past couple days and it makes me so much more motivated to get things done. Yay! Hope you all have a great day, and thanks for watching! 😃 ~Laura
